Hunt
Season:
September 1 through May 31
We
discovered that by closing April 1st we had been missing the best
time of year to hunt. We have extended hunting to a full nine months. The April/May weather is beautiful,
and the days are longer. We just need to change birds to enjoy a successful
9-month hunting season.
The
best time of year for both chukars and pheasants is September/October,
when it is dry. From November to April 1st it’s best to concentrate
on pheasants because it’s too
wet for chukars.
After
April 1st, finish the season hunting chukars, who prefer it dry. The
supply of pheasants is depleted after April 1st, but we can always
find chukars for you, and even when the cover is beaten down we can
hide chukars to make for a very good hunt.

Pheasant
hunts make great gifts!
"We
love Wally’s place. It’s a great thing for residents
and visitors alike. We had the birthday party for our 7-year-old
twins there, and they said it was the best birthday party they
ever had. We’ve also had Christmas parties there for the
last three years, and we take our dogs up there to run. The camaraderie
is fun, and the scenery is off-the-map beautiful—truly spectacular.
It’s great for anyone who loves the outdoors. I encourage
anyone to take one of his guided tours, or
hunt for pheasants or chukars (they’re
faster). Wally is always hospitable, helpful and eager to please." ~

Tips
for
Successful Hunts
We’ve
learned how to run the club effectively by working with the birds and
watching the hunters.
For the last 5 years we’ve been releasing 1,000 birds a year, and
whether we’re releasing 4 birds or 80 in a day we take great pride
in releasing each bird separately for a quality hunt. It’s very
important that hunters get their birds, and our hunters have a very good
rate of success, but it is hunting.
You can improve your success rate by being in the field and ready to
hunt by the time your hunt is scheduled to start. It’s important
to arrive early enough to sign in, go over your hunt particulars, and
allow your dog to run around and do his thing. That’s because if
you book a 10 am hunt, we release your birds at 9:30.
A
lot of people will book a 10 am hunt and show up at 10 am. Then we
go through the process. By the time we get into the field it’s
10:30, and the birds have had an hour head start, and these birds are game!

Tournaments

like to do a tournament or a dog trial in April or May. Contact us

All
guided hunts can vary from what you would like to hunt, combining several
hunting opportunities into one trip. Overall success varies year to year
according to factors such as hunter ability, weather, drive and game movement.

Aleutian
Geese
In
the early 1980s there were 800 Aleutian geese left; they were nearly extinct.
Now they are such a success story that the flock is currently estimated
at 100,000. Hunting is necessary to maintain balance and tokeep them in
flying trim. Geese who settle too long in grasslands get too fat to be
able to survive in their leaner nesting grounds. (Fat snow geese have
decimated their nesting grounds.)
Through
the fall 60,000 or more Aleutian geese migrate south along the Pacific
flyway through Humboldt County. Around January 15 they start setting
up their winter and spring feeding seasons in Humboldt and Del Norte
Counties grass fields until April 15 when the wind shift and, like
clockwork, they begin the trek north to the Aleutian Islands nesting
grounds. They are a wonder to watch, and the north coast is one of
the only areas to see them in the Continental U.S., and there is a
special season to hunt them.

Habitat Conservation
At
Northcoast Outfitters we prize conservation and consider ourselves
stewards of the land. When we were in Arcata we fenced off several
sloughs and a pond so that cattle couldn’t get into them. In
Bear River we raked a lot of brush, replanting with clovers for the
cattle, deer and quail, as well as replanted redwood trees. When we
moved to Loleta we cleared a pond that had been silted in. Last year
we had at least 150 mallards coming into the pond.

Education & Outreach
Just
as important is passing along the appreciation and value of the land
and the cycles of nature. This year we’re donating three youth
hunts during Christmas vacation for a prize drawing by California Waterfowl.
Each two-day hunt will include pheasant and chukar hunting on the first
day, and a mallard hunt on the second day. It will be a day that the
kids will never forget, including a dinner and overnight stay.
Northcoast Outfitters has donated hunts to Ducks Unlimited (Eureka and
Eel River Valley Chapters), California Waterfowl and the National Wild
Turkey Federation.
